History is best understood through careful research and the voices of the communities it represents. The website draws on the following resources.

• Jefferson County Genealogical Society: Laurel Grove Cemetery — cemetery history, location, and research information. Its account cites City of Dreams, edited by Peter Simpson, for the 1871 purchase of the present grounds.

Published accounts differ on the cemetery’s early dates. This website attributes the 1871 account to the Genealogical Society rather than presenting it as an undisputed founding date.
